Winter poem

The snow fell unexpectedly

Onto the top of the hills

A thick coat – velvety – powdery –

Glistening with frost and chill

Dull silence fell at the same time

As the silvery flakes fell

And I could only hear the chime

Of the church’s brazen bell

Watching the flakes drop steadily

I saw the dark branches shiver

And from the thickness of clouds, eerily,

A cool light suddenly shimmer

The spread of land was icy – frozen –

Its utter beauty was breath-taking

And it was only then

That I could feel the cold within
